A new de-sexing campaign aimed at registered menacing dogs uses a tech-savvy technique.
Auckland Council is launching a texting initiative which offers free de-sexing to American pit bull terriers and other registered menacing dogs.
The scheme TXT2DESEX is part of a plan to reduce specific dog-related incidents in the region, said Tracey Moore, manager, animal management at Auckland Council.
Ms Moore said de-sexing tends to lower aggression and wandering which will ‘reduce dog harm and make Auckland safer”.
“In general, we have found that communities, the media and the general public are supportive of moves to reduce dog-related harm.”
TXT2DESEX is partly funded by the central government and runs until June 30.
Humane Society organiser Carol Claridge recommended owners take should advantage of the free service.
“It is often a financial issue which stops dogs from being neutered,” she said.
However spokesperson Karen Bachelor from the American Pit Bull Terrier Association Inc said the initiative was irrational and would be ineffective.
She said there should be less demonising against menacing breeds and more council focus on existing dog control bylaws.
TXT2DESEX follows a 2016 Auckland Council de-sexing campaign which Ms Moore said was a great achievement in working with dog owners.
Results from a 2016 Auckland Council initiative was hailed a success by Auckland Council animal management manager Tracey Moore.
