Many young Aucklanders say they will not vote in the forthcoming local body elections.

Voter turnout in the last general election was 20 per cent lower for those aged 18-29 than for 65-69 year olds.

Only 34 per cent of those eligible voted in the last Auckland Council elections in 2013.

Local elections are happening now across New Zealand, with candidates vying for mayoral and council jobs.

Aucklanders are voting for a new mayor as Len Brown is stepping down after two terms.

Less than half of eligible Auckland residents vote in council and mayoral elections. Turnout among all age groups reached a record low in the 2013 local elections.

Residents have from now until October 5 to have their say.

With council voting papers arriving in mailboxes, Te Waha Nui asked mainly young Aucklanders whether they will vote. Video: Angela Woods and Laura Tupou
