A new Samoan children’s book launched this week is helping revitalise the language during Samoan Language Week.

The book, Alagā‘upu Fa’asāmoa ma Uiga mo Tamaiti, was written by teacher and community leader Tauanuʻu Perenise Tapu Sitagata.

It uses well-known alagā‘upu (proverbs) to teach values such as family, service and leadership.

Sitagata says his connection to Samoan culture and language motivated him to share his stories with children.

“There’s so much in our culture that children need to see and hear in their everyday lives, especially in books.”

The book is in both Samoan and English to help encourage children to embrace the island culture more.

“It’s so important for our kids to read in Samoan, to understand the meaning behind the words, and then to be able to reflect on those ideas in English,” Sitagata says.

Teaching for more than 40 years, Sitagata says his passion for language education comes from both the classroom and his home life.

“I had a rule of no English [at home], I didn’t want my parents or relatives to come speak Samoan to my kids and they don’t understand.

“I really don’t like that, so that’s where the inspiration comes from, home.”

He says the book is just the beginning of a wider effort to grow Samoan-language resources for schools.

“This is the first book, but there’s no doubt I’ll write more, especially for Year 9 to 13 students, because that’s where the need is,” he says.

Oratia Books editorial director Carolyn Lagahetau says Sitagata’s voice brings depth and clarity to the publisher’s Pasifika list.

“His standing as an orator and teacher made this book a strong and culturally rich addition.

“With the declining use of Pacific languages, this kind of accessible bilingual resource is key to supporting younger readers,” she says.

The book’s launch coincides with Samoan Language Week, which runs from June 1 to June 7.

This year’s theme, La malu lou sā (A well-grounded self is a successful self), focuses on identity and cultural pride.

Sitagata says that while the week is significant, it’s just one step in a larger journey.

“Language Week is a starting point, it’s not the end.

“It's a beautiful journey, but it’s not easy.".
