Chris Brown has kicked off his Breezy Bowl XX world tour to celebrate 20 years in music, but Aotearoa fans have again been left off the map.
The singer remains banned from entering New Zealand due to his 2009 assault conviction for attacking then-girlfriend Rihanna.
Despite the “world tour” title, Brown’s concerts are limited to North America and Europe. He hasn’t performed in New Zealand since 2008.
AUT senior lecturer and feminist media-studies researcher Dr Christina Batistich-Vogels says Brown’s ongoing popularity, especially among young women, reflects “parasocial relationships”, where fans form emotional bonds with public figures.
“Just because you’re a woman doesn’t mean you’re going to stop supporting an artist who’s misogynistic,” she says.
“There’s a growing number of Gen Zs engaging with ultra-traditional views of masculinity and femininity, and Chris Brown fits that mould for some.”

For 25-year-old university student Emerald Kaupa, that bond is strong enough to fly across the world.
Kaupa has plans to travel from New Zealand to Manchester for the concert, which wouldbe her first overseas trip for a musician.
“It’s his 20th anniversary. I’ve been a fan since I was really young. I’ve always liked his music and liked him despite, you know, everything,
“It’s worth it. Money comes and goes. Memories are forever.”
Kaupa estimates the trip, including VIP tickets, return flights and accommodation, will cost up to $5000.
Her dream highlight? A meet and greet. “He makes those few moments with fans really special. It’s on my bucket list.”
When asked about Brown’s past, Kaupa says she believes in second chances.
“Yes, what he did wasn’t great. But he was younger, and people should be given the opportunity to grow. We’ve punished him long enough.”
She also addressed criticism of fans who continue to support him. “That’s our personal choice. We’re not telling anyone else to like him.”
Brown was recently arrested in the UK over a separate alleged assault in 2023 but is allowed to continue touring while on bail. His court hearing is scheduled for June 20.
